In Pencil On Purpose

Is your new 2022 planner set? Mine is more robust than a calendar—meal planner, weekly goals, monthly budget, reading list, goals for “most important, necessary, useful and pleasant.” The meal planner has space for breakfast lunch and dinner…so now I’m thinking of all three meal periods when I write my grocery list and plan for the overall heath and variety for my family. The allotted space for weekly goals is only 3 short lines – so it’s easier to stay focused and accomplish what I set out to conquer.

BUT

I’ve made the decision that everything I write in this fancy planner is in pencil. This year, I’m bringing in the knowledge that events and plans will change. No matter how great the plan or how detailed the steps, there will be unforeseen events that influence the outcome of each day, week, month, and year. I’ll forget to thaw out chicken. The baby will need extra snuggles on a tough day. The kids will get sick. The hubs will volunteer for an activity. Omicron will suppress the travel industry. TikTok will influence behaviors. The Metaverse will be a thing. Writing my plans in pencil stresses the importance of flexibility in a world that is constantly shifting gears.
